Activities in Economic Stimulus Package II – Bauhaus Archive – Museum of Design
The Bauhaus Archive was founded in 1960 in Darmstadt. Walter Gropius and other Bauhaus members supported the project. On one of his visits Berlin Gropius succeeded to get former senator interested in the Bauhaus Archive. The Senate of Berlin was ready to provide land and funds for the museum. 1971 the Bauhaus Archive has his temporary accommodation in Berlin. In 1976 was the foundation stone laid, in 1979, the new building was handed over. Gropius’ design from 1964 particularly recalling is the striking silhouette of the shed roofs. In 1997 the building was declared a national monument.
The previous four large air systems of the exhibition area were replaced with two combined systems as full air conditioning, which provide in particular for the visitor an optimal indoor climate without drafts. Highly efficient, regenerative rotary heat exchanger and built-in refrigeration systems now serve the energy optimization. Furthermore, an acoustic cooling ceiling was installed.
